Gis For Health Sector Programme

  • Overview

INTRODUCTION

This course provides an introduction to GIS and its applications in epidemiological and public health research. Participants will learn the fundamentals of using and integrating geographical and non-spatial data, working with decoding, visualization, thematic mapping, and comprehending spatial relationships, as well as geographic scale and spatial precision. Particular emphasis will be placed on techniques for spatial linkage of exposure, contextual information, and confounder information for epidemiological or health risk assessment studies. Specific skills and tools will be introduced in relation to assessing exposure to a variety of environmental risks.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the completion of the course, participants will be able to: •Understand the fundamentals of spatial data and its use in decision making •Undertake spatial analysis of environment and health data •Explain why geographic data and tools are crucial for health decision makers

  • Distinguish between the various tools used to collect, analyze, and manipulate geographic data.
  • Work with technical experts to create program-specific geographic products.
  • Understand geography as a unifying framework and GIS as a tool to collect, link, analyze, visualize, manage, and share data and information.
  • Investigate spatial patterns of health risks and disease rates through working with and integrating spatial and non-spatial data, geocoding spatial data, displaying spatial data, and integrating data from various geographic scales and spatial precision.

DURATION

5 Days

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Public health practitioners, epidemiologists, exposure scientists, quantitative health geographers, risk assessors, students.
